Two horses that were lost by a hunter the spring before. They took refuge on a mountain top where the snow was often blown away. One horse survived the winter. South Fork Valley again. He talks about how the snow is 10 to 15 feet deep. He talks about the tragedy of the lost horses, that may not survive. One did not. He says they are at 10,500 feet on Deer Creek Pass. He also describes the ruggedness and remoteness of the Thorofare.
