Interview with Patrick about the grizzly mauling he suffered on his ranch June 20, 3013. He says he was turning on a headgate, when he heard his dog screaming. Says he charged around a corner, and was 40 yards from a sow with two very young cubs. Said she mauled him on the spot. He says as she came in he hit her with a shovel, and she went for his face, ""because they are trying to disarm your weapons."" She removed the front portion of his face. Dragged him twenty feet, bit his hands and his head, then took off. Said he knew ""this was going to cause some paperwork."" Tried to use his phone, heard her coming back, ""she tied into me again."" This time he was in a defensive posture, and she bit his head and took off. He walked home about a quarter mile away. Says she bit him, evulsing my nose (biting it off) and took off his cheek. He says he didn't feel anything at all, and found his lip on his chest. He says she could have killed him, but neutralized him so she could get her cubs out of there. I was not challenge to her. Her muscle density is twice what ours is. Closeup shows his nose is not his own. He says grizzly bears are not in the killing mode. He says black bears think of humans of food, but grizzlies don't. He talks about how he felt. He says they can kill you with a bite. He says, ""I love the grizzly bear. I should have been prepared, but people get complacent. Right now this time of year, it's time to be prepared: you need to carry bear spray, go in groups of three or more, and horseback if you can survive the ensuing rodeo. I've been on the ground with a grizzly bear, so I know what I would do."" He says you need to be aware, and read the lay of the land. Says if you do have bear spray you should practice with it. ""When it happens, it happens fast. She was on me in two in a half to three seconds."" He says more people get killed by lightning, dogs...but you need to be prepared for everything. Says a bear might be out there trying to protect a food source or babies. He says he told Game and Fish not to shoot the bear. He says you just have to assume things can be anywhere. If you want to participate in this beautiful wilderness, you need to be aware.
