Interview with Gerber. She says there were at least a dozen serious photographers taking pictures of the cow and calf moose stranded on the island by the rising river water. She says they spent four or five days photographing the pair, trapped by the runoff. She says the cow moose pushed a yearling out, then had her calf on the island. At one point, the cow swam across the river to the shore, and the calf went under a couple of times as it tried to cross, and the cow came back for the calf. She says they were on the island for two weeks before they could get across the river. She says at one point, 75 to 100 people stopped to look at the cow/calf pair. She says she later saw what seemed to be the same little calf, but no mom. ""Calf is fending for itself in an area with a lot of predators."" She says it probably won't make it through the winter. Gerber says there was a report of a cow moose being hit by a car, and she is afraid it is the calf's mother. She says many moose, elk, sheep, and deer are hit and killed by cars in the Forest every year. She remembers seeing the carcass of the beautiful bull moose hit and killed by a car. Says black bears and grizzlies are hit and killed. She says speed is a factor, with ""people flying around you."" She says people go 75 mph on that road. She says it makes her angry, because she doesn't want to see a dead animal up ahead. She says I just don't think people are aware. She says the big flashing signs Game and Fish put up helped after the cow and calf moose left the island. she says she's seen Big Horn Sheep hit. She says they bed down on the road in the winter, to get warmth from the pavement. She says she would be devastated to find out the cow had been hit by a car, because her and her calf's survival was such a success story.
