William F . Cody and another man stand on either side of a Daughters of the American Revolution Pony Express Memorial St . Joseph , Missouri . Cody wears a light colored suit and hat . He rests his arm on top of the memorial . The other man wears a shirt and dark colored vest and hat . He rests his arm on top of the memorial . The plaque on the memorial reads "This monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution and the city of St . Joseph marks the place where the first Pony Express started on April 3 , 1869 . 1912 " A group of people and trees can be seen in the background .
